Amington Playground Reopens

A play area, which has been closed since May when the safety surfacing and steps up to the equipment were set on fire, has been reopened following repairs.

The play area at the Amington Recreation Ground was closed off in May following a series of vandal attacks in which the safety surfacing was first pulled up to reveal the rubble beneath and then set on fire.  The arson attack also damaged the steps to the play equipment.

Following the attacks, the play area was judged unsafe and was closed off to users.  Now the play area is back in use again, after the safety surfacing was refurbished and the steps replaced.

Cllr Steve Claymore, Cabinet member for Economic Development and Enterprise said, “This is the second play area which has just been reopened after costly repairs brought about by vandal attacks, with the high beam seesaw at Burgess Park being repaired and brought back into use last month.

“Hundreds of children get a lot of enjoyment from these play areas, but we do not have an endless supply of money to spend on repairing and replacing play equipment.  We are calling on the people of Tamworth to keep their eyes open and to report anyone they see damaging play equipment.  Tamworth Borough Council will use all means at our disposal to identify those behind this damage and to prosecute them.”

Anyone who witnesses damage to play areas is asked to call the police on 0300 123 4455 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
