Burton Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust announced at tonight’s meeting of Tamworth Borough Council’s Healthier & Safer scrutiny committee it is recommending to its Board that the day case theatre at the Sir Robert Peel community hospital, Tamworth, should remain open for a further six months from December 2014 until June 2015.
The Trust Board meeting in December was originally due to decide on the closure of the day case theatre. However, following a period of comprehensive public consultation carried out by Engaging Communities Staffordshire and supported by local MPs, councils and NHS organisations, the Trust’s board will now be asked to delay any closure decision until June 2015.
Deferring the decision will give the Trust more time to see if it can keep the day case theatre open by increasing activity.
Over the next six months, the Trust will implement a full action plan designed to boost activity at the facility, including marketing services to GP practices and ensuring local patients are being offered the choice of using the Sir Robert Peel hospital for non-complex day case procedures. The Trust will also work closely with the rest of the health community, including the Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust, to increase activity at the unit.
Mark Powell, Director of Operations at Burton Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said, “We launched the consultation on closure because activity at the theatre has declined rapidly over the last five years due to changes in medical practice and a reduction in non-complex day case procedures.
“However, we’ve listened carefully to local people and feedback from the consultation clearly shows that many patients feel they aren’t being given the choice of using the hospital’s day case theatre. If we can turn this around and increase activity by around 50 percent then keeping the day case theatre open might be a viable option.”
The announcement came at the start of the meeting held with BHFT and South East Staffordshire and Seisdon CCG to discuss the future of services at Sir Robert Peel hospital.
