Burton Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust’s Board has upheld the Trust’s proposal that the day case theatre at the Sir Robert Peel community hospital, Tamworth, should remain open for a further six months from December 2014 until June 2015.
The Trust’s Board took the decision at their latest meeting held at Queen’s Hospital, Burton-upon-Trent, on Thursday 4th December.
Following a period of comprehensive public consultation carried out by Engaging Communities Staffordshire and supported by local MPs, councils and NHS organisations the Trust’s Board agreed to delay any closure decision until June 2015.
Mark Powell, Director of Operations at Burton Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, explains: “We launched the consultation on closure because activity at the theatre has declined rapidly over the last five years due to changes in medical practice and a reduction in non-complex day case procedures.
“We’re working closely with the local health community and implementing a full action plan to boost activity at the theatre. However, if activity does not increase at the unit to the level that is required, then the Trust will recommend to its Board that the day case theatre should be closed.”
The Trust will keep local people informed of its progress through a series of events and bulletins over the next few months.
