A well-used fitness programme aimed at people who may never have used a gym before or who have been referred for exercise by their GP across Tamworth has been saved from closure after its funding ended.
The Active Recovery Exercise For All programme offers tailor-made fitness programmes for people who are not traditional gym users, aiming to improve the health and wellbeing of people with a range of medical conditions, including obesity, type 2 diabetes, clinical depression, osteoporosis, hypertension and joint problems.
The sessions are led by fully qualified instructors at the purpose-built gym in Orchard Street throughout the week, with evening sessions also taking place on Tuesday and Thursday. Users are mainly referred from the Lifestyle Service and are offered a relaxed and encouraging atmosphere, along with a professional gym experience.
The programme is part of Tamworth Borough Council’s Active Tamworth initiative, which aims to improve the health and wellbeing of people of all ages throughout Tamworth. It is currently funded to the tune of £25,000 a year by Public Health Staffordshire, but that funding will end in April this year.
The Council is keen to see the very well used service survive and is now opening it up for more customers and offering longer opening hours in a bid to attract more people who may benefit from the help of the project.
A new monthly subscription is being introduced, offering members the chance to sign up for £30 a month for unlimited use of the gym. Pay-as-you-go is also available at £3 per session and everyone signing up to use the service will get a free induction.
Cllr Stephen Doyle, Cabinet Member for Communities & Public Health, said, “This is a valuable service which offers people who may not feel comfortable using a traditional gym the chance to improve their health and fitness in a comfortable and supportive environment, with the help of fully qualified fitness instructors.
“We feel it is very important that we try to save this service from closure and would encourage anyone who may benefit from it to sign up. The exercise programme can make a big difference to your health. The Council is trialling the revised service for a number of months before considering the long-term future of the scheme.”
Anyone who would like to book an induction or sign up for a subscription to the Active Recovery Exercise For All programme is asked to call 07972 637981 or 01827 709387.
