Under the Private Sector Leasing Scheme, a person with a property to let can sign up for a minimum of a year. The Council then takes on full responsibility for the management and renting of the property, paying the owner a guaranteed rent in advance, with no management fees.
The property is then let to provide temporary housing to people in need, to reduce the need for B&B accommodation. The council will provide free gas and electricity safety checks and a free Energy Performance Certificate and at the end of the 12-month lease, the scheme can then be extended or the property can be returned to the owner.
Tamworth Borough Council currently managed four properties under the Private Sector Leasing Scheme, but would like to increase that to 10.
Cllr Michelle Thurgood, Cabinet member for Housing and Waste Management, said: “We would like to encourage people with property to let, perhaps something they have inherited which is standing empty, to talk to us about signing up for the Private Sector Leasing Scheme.
“It guarantees a monthly rental income, while providing much-needed temporary accommodation to people in need.”
Tamworth Borough Council is currently looking for one, two and three bedroom properties for the Private Sector Leasing Scheme.
