Staffordshire’s Teenagers to Continue to Benefit from Discounted Bus Travel

Your Staffordshire CardYoung people from across Staffordshire will continue to benefit from discounted bus travel following plans to extend a unique travel scheme.

Thousands of youngsters from across the county are already using the Your Staffordshire Card, which allows young people aged 11 to 19 to take bus journeys for £1.20.

The travel card gives young people a cost effective way to get to school, college, university, an apprenticeship, work or to get out and about to meet friends.  Not only do cardholders benefit from discounted bus travel but they can also take advantage of discounts and special offers from over 70 local businesses.

To ensure the continued success of the scheme, from 1 April 2016 the cost per journey will see a small increase of 10p to £1.30 for 16 to 19-year-olds.  Young people aged 11 to 15 will continue to pay £1.20 per journey.  Anyone applying for a card for the first time will have to pay an application fee of £10.

Cllr Mark Deaville, Cabinet Support Member for Highways and Transport at Staffordshire County Council explained that the optional card provided real value for money for young people, helping a typical 16-year-old save over £6 per week.

Mark said, “The Your Staffordshire Card has proved to be a huge success since its launch, with almost a third of the county’s teenagers now signed up to the scheme.

“It’s a bit like a railcard, and because it can be used at any time of the day on bus journeys it gives young people a real cost effective way of getting to either school, college, training, work or out and about with friends.  There’s even more good news for cardholders too, as the card entitles people to loads of great offers from lots of different businesses.

“Having a card and getting on the bus can leave more money in your pocket.  And, for parents it can also mean less running about, so make sure your teenager has their card.”

The Your Staffordshire Card was introduced in April 2011 and has almost 30,000 young people signed up.  The optional scheme is subsidised by the county council.
