Be Alert to Bogus Workmen in Tamworth

scam alertTamworth residents are urged to be on their guard against cold callers at the door following a bogus incident in the area.

Staffordshire Police received a call just before 5.45pm on Monday 28 March, reporting a man attending an address in Claremont Road, Tamworth and asking for money that he said was owed to him after work was carried out at the property some time ago.

The man, who gave his name as “Gary”, was given a cheque to cover the cost of the work at the time, but he was now stating that he was unable to cash the cheque and wanted paying again.

When he was told that he wasn’t getting any money and that the police would be contacted, he left the property and drove off in a black Vauxhall Vectra.

Please alert elderly relatives and friends not to agree to work, without consulting someone they trust for a valued opinion first.

Residents are encouraged to follow the following advice to avoid becoming a victim of bogus callers:

  • Never trust anyone calling at the door without a prior appointment. Should you receive such a call, leave the door locked, the caller will still hear you
  • Do not allow anyone to carry out work at your home or sell you something you do not want
  • Do not part with any money until you are happy with work carried out
  • Contact police if and every time you have suspicions about any caller to the door

Anyone with any information on the above incidents is asked to call Staffordshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 586 of 28 March.

You can also report crime by contacting the independent crime-fighting charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or through their Anonymous Online Form at www.crimestoppers-uk.org.  No personal details are taken, information cannot be traced or recorded and you will not go to court.
