Tamworth Gives its Backing to Social Saturday Initiative

social-saturdayTamworth Borough Council is getting behind Social Saturday, a nationwide campaign aimed at celebrating social enterprise.

Social Saturday takes place on Saturday October 15, when towns and communities across Britain are being asked to show their support for social enterprises – businesses or voluntary organisations which work for a social or environmental aim.

In Tamworth, the Borough Council, working with market operators LSD Promotions, is providing a free market stall throughout the day to allow two social enterprises from the borough to promote their services.

The two Tamworth-based groups, which will be raising their profile on the market stall on Social Saturday, are Communities Together CIC and Creative Choices CIC.

Communities Together CIC offers job clubs, work experience and volunteering opportunities, IT support club, walking and cycling groups, pushchair walking group, healthy cooking sessions, painting and pottery clubs, befriending sessions, games, quizzes, arts and crafts and much more.

It operates from a number of locations across the borough and has just opened a new hub at the Activity Centre in the Castle Grounds.  Earlier this year, Communities Together CIC received the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.

Creative Choices CIC, currently based in the Carnegie Centre, provides services for adults with learning disabilities, aimed at offering choice, empowerment and inspiration.  It offers day provision from Monday to Friday, as well as offering transport and one-to-one support.

Creative Choices also runs a social club called The Vibe on Saturday mornings at Tamworth Boxing Club for people aged 14 and over with a learning disability.  The social club provides a wide range of activities including crafts, games, disco, karaoke, bingo and quizzes.

Both organisations will be on hand on the market stall on Saturday October 15 to share information about their aims and what they offer.

Cllr Stephen Doyle, Cabinet member for Communities and Wellbeing, said, “Both of these groups do amazing work to help and support the Tamworth community and it would be great to see large numbers of people coming to the stall on Social Saturday to support them in turn.”

Social Saturday is a national campaign led by Social Enterprise UK and the Cabinet Office.
