Conservative Run Council to give Free Town Centre Parking in Run Up to Christmas

FreeParkingTraders, shoppers and visitors to Tamworth are being given an early Christmas present by the Conservative run Borough Council – free festive car parking.

Parking will be free in all of Tamworth Borough Council’s car parks on two Saturdays leading up to Christmas – December 3 and Christmas Eve.  Ankerside is also offering free parking in its car park on those two Saturdays.

The car parking fees are being waived on those two days in a bid to boost town centre trade by encouraging more people to come into Tamworth to shop.

The first free parking Saturday is on December 3, when the town centre takes part in the nationwide Small Business Saturday campaign to encourage people to shop with independent traders.  Shops throughout the town centre will take part in the event, which will be promoted across social media to encourage shoppers to support independent traders in Tamworth.

Small Business Saturday began in the USA six years ago and has grown to become a national event.  It aims to promote small independent traders and encourage people to support their local businesses.

The initiative is being supported in Tamworth by Tamworth Borough Council and Destination Tamworth.

Tamworth Borough Council Deputy Leader, Cllr Rob Pritchard, said, “We are keen to support the town centre, especially at important times like Christmas.  We made the decision to waive parking charges on these two very busy shopping days because we want to support traders and boost town centre trade.

“There has been a lot of support for Small Business Saturday in previous years, and I hope that a lot of people will support it again this year.  Please tell your family and friends so we can make this the busiest Christmas for the town centre ever.  Please come out and support YOUR town centre.”

Extra markets will also take place in the run-up to Christmas.  As well as the usual Tuesday, Friday and Saturday markets, there will be additional markets on Monday December 19, Wednesday December 21 and Thursday December 22.  The market will run as usual on Friday December 23 And Christmas Eve.

Shoppers, workers and people who visit the town centre regularly are being reminded that parking permits for the Jolly Sailor and River Drive car parks are available for just £170 a year or £20 per month.

The permit does not guarantee a space but gives parking for just over 75p a day if used every day of the working week.  Permits are available from the Tamworth Information Centre in Marmion House, Lichfield Street, or by calling 01827 709581.
